Autism Awareness Association, Inc. was started in September 2007 by Hattie Irving. The motivating force to start this organization came from Hattie's grandson's diagnosis with POD-NOS which is in the Autism spectrum. Autism has affected the lives of millions and the numbers keep growing, in 2007 alone 1 in 150 children was diagnosed with Autism. Autism Awareness Association will offer a variety of support services including a variety of resources, education, mentoring, nutritional counseling, support groups, and scholarships to families affected by any form of Autism.

What Is Autism?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Autism is one of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). ASDs are developmental disabilities that cause substantial impairments in social interaction and communication and the presence of unusual behaviors and interests. Many people with ASDs also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, and reacting to different sensations. The thinking and learning abilities of people with ASDs can vary—from gifted to severely challenged. An ASD begins before the age of 3 and lasts throughout a person's life.
